We hope you had an enjoyable and relaxing summer! We are looking forward to welcoming all pupils into Year 2. This term, we have lots of new and engaging topics for the children as well as some exciting visitors and event days!
History
Great Fire of London
This term, we will be learning about the Great Fire of London! As part of this topic, we will have a fully immersive Great Fire of London day where the children will dress up as if they were alive in 1666. We will be studying this topic through the following key questions:
- What was it like to live in London in 1666?
- What were the events of the Great Fire of London?
- Why did the fire spread so quickly?
- Could the start and spread of the fire have been prevented?

This term, we will be using percussion instruments to create dynamic animal sounds that you might find on an African safari! Pupils will compose a series of their own calls and responses by using their voices alongside the instruments!

Pupils will explore their local environment to collect resources to create patterns in nature. We will photograph them and then represent them using a range of media.

This term in D&T, we will be learning about wheels and axles whilst creating our own moving vehicles!

What makes up the UK?
In geography this term, we will be looking at the characteristics of the United Kingdom. To start the topic, we will explore Bideford and then we will begin to learn about the four countries of the UK.
- What physical and human features are there in Bideford?
- What is a town, village or city?

Everyday materials
This term in Science, we will start by learning about everyday materials. We will explore the different properties of materials and how it makes them suitable for different purposes. We will be conducting an experiment into different shapes of objects and finding out the best material for a shelter.

After half term, we will be learning about animals including humans where we will be focusing on how animals have offspring and how they change as they grow older. We will be researching into differences between lifecycles and what we need to survive.

Each week, your child will have one sheet of maths focusing on a number sense strategy that we have been working on in class.
Each child will still have access to TTRS should they want to practise their times tables at home.
We would also love for your child to read or listen to someone reading to them each day.
