We are incredibly excited to welcome back our Year 3 class! We hope you all had a fantastic summer and are ready to learn all the incredible topics we have lined up for the year. Throughout, we will be sharing our learning journey as well as multiple achievements accumulated by the class. History
Anglo-Saxon migration to Britain
This term, Year 3 will learn about the Anglo-Saxon migration to Britain and how it changed life in our country. Each student will investigate using archaeological evidence and historical sources to learn about Anglo-Saxon homes, villages, jobs, beliefs and everyday life. Pupils will develop their understanding of chronology and historical enquiry while learning about an important period in Britain's history. Where relevant, we will incorporate interactive learning to deepen their understanding and be able to link tangible evidence with theory.

Caribbean Instrumental
This term, we will explore Caribbean instrumental music. We will learn about the sounds, rhythms and instruments associated with the Caribbean, developing their understanding of pulse, rhythm and melody. Instruments will be used within the classroom where possible to cement this learning further.

Shell structures
In our upcoming topic, pupils will explore shell structures and create 3D shapes. In order to accomplish this, we will be creating 2D nets and devising a plan on how to create our structures to achieve maximum stability and usability. We will also be discussing environmental issues relating to the wastage of materials when packaging items including the three Rs — reducing, recycling and reusing.

Cloth, thread & paint
This term, Year 3 will explore cloth, thread & paint by colour-mixing and learning different mark-making techniques. We will also study the inspiring work of Alice Kettle and Hannah Rae. Children will discover different interpretations of art and develop their observational skills by looking closely at different objects.

What would I find in the different climate zones?
In our upcoming geography topic, What would I find in the different climate zones, Year 3 will explore the different climate zones around the world. They will explore how climate affects the way people, plants and animals live as well as be able to locate the world's major climate zones, including tropical, temperate, polar and arid regions. They will use maps, atlases and geographical vocabulary to compare different parts of the world and develop their understanding of how our planet's climate influences the natural environment.

Christianity
This term, Year 3 will be learning about the Trinity and why it's important to Christians. To achieve this, we will be learning about the creation story and how Christians might feel about the ten commandments. By the end of the unit, the children should be able to recall the ten commandments and understand the role of God's guidance.

Rocks and soils / Forces and magnets
Rocks and soils
For our first topic, Year 3 will explore rocks and soils, learning about the different types of rocks and their formation. Children will investigate and compare the properties of different rocks, carrying out simple tests and making observations. They will also explore how soils are formed and discover the different materials found within soil.

Forces and magnets
Our second topic will involve children developing their understanding of forces and magnets. They will be learning which materials are attracted to magnets and discovering how magnets attract and repel each other. During this topic, we will be using our observational and reporting skills to investigate how objects move and how forces can change their movement.

Athletics & Hockey
In our PE sessions this term we will be practising different skills needed for hockey and athletics. In hockey, we will learn how to successfully control the hockey stick and ball with the objective of being able to pass to our teammates and score points. In athletics, we will develop running, jumping and throwing skills.

As well as our teaching sessions, we will be exploring all of our curriculum more through child-led sessions. Some of the exciting things on offer include:
- Golden time — being able to build and invent different things in a team environment
- Story time — escaping into different worlds each day through exposure to different genres of text
